Brian & Sheila Murphy Perpetual Trophy 2010

John Gibbon receiving the winners trophy on behalf of Burke Corbett from Brian & Sheila Murphy

This race had its fair share of drama, and that was even before the race started! The race sponsors boat, Bumbalash, seemed to not allow for the spring low tide as he made his way to the course, and duly ran aground. He has since quelled the rumour that the boat is to be renamed "Made a hash" and has allowed that he has done what the state couldn't do, get stuck into a bank!

To add to the drama, the predicted F4 wind seemed to take a tea break around race start time, prompting a brief discussion within the fleet as whether the race should continue. Luckily, the tea break taken by the wind was a short one, and the race turned out to be quite an entertaining conclusion to the 2010 racing calender.

In a race that saw all the boats finish within 22 minutes, Topaz took the win, with Burke Corbett edging out Seamie Fenlon by 47 seconds, in the recently re-engined Fearloinge. The two boats rounded the final mark in close order, with Fearloinge having the edge at that stage. As the two boats made their way down the last leg, dead into the wind, the tacking tactics of Topaz turned the advantage around to take the win by a close margain. John & Mary Cullen's C-Clipse took the final place on the podium one minute further back.

Less than ten minutes covered the next nine boats home, with some close battles in that bunch. 9 seconds was all that seperated Yola and Rascal for 5th and 6th, while Willi Balzar and Michael Buckley, in The Ballad of Leapylee and Twlight Song respectively, couldn't be seperated by the human eye on the finishing line, they both tied for 10th place. Not to be like professional footballers, neither skipper has asked for the introduction of finish line technology. Ray Bates on Tweedldum had the misfortune of a baby stay working its way loose on the second leg, putting an end to his race while holding his own against much bigger opposition. The club had one of its biggest turnouts for this race, boosted by the visiting yachts, Renegade from Dunmore East and Wild Honey from Howth.

With the 2010 calender now finished, it will be a wait until 2011 to see who will try and overturn some of the battles from 2010.
